Giardiasis is a diarrheal disease caused by Giardia in dogs or cats. Giardia are tiny parasites that infect the small intestine and are invisible to the naked eye. Giardia is common all over the world. There are 41 different species in total, which affect not only dogs and cats, but also rabbits and humans. When a dog or cat suffers from giardiasis, Giardia duodenalis or Giardia intestinalis is usually responsible.

Once the parasites enter the pet's body, they attack the mucous membranes of the small intestine. Here they feed on sugar, which the four-legged friend takes in with its food, and under suitable conditions they multiply very quickly. Giardia is highly contagious. An animal infected with them can therefore easily transmit them to other pets or to humans. The latter is relatively rare, but there is a risk of zoonosis.

Therefore, caution should be exercised when coming into contact with a dog or cat suffering from giardiasis. In this case at the very least, people should not let their four-legged friend lick them, and this applies especially to children. Particularly in young and weak animals, the infection can cause severe symptoms, which can have serious consequences for the four-legged friend's health.

Symptoms of small intestinal parasites:

• Diarrhea (may even be bloody or mucous)
• Vomiting (mainly in severe infection)
• Weight loss, loss of appetite or, conversely, increased appetite
• Bloating, abdominal pain
• Dry, dull coat
• Lethargy, fatigue
• Itchy anus, dragging the bottom along the ground (“scooting”)

Test procedure

Read the Instructions for Use carefully before performing the test. Before testing, allow the test and the unopened reagent to reach room temperature (15-30°C).

1. Collect a fresh fecal sample using the sampling swab, then open the sampling tube. Place the swab into the tube filled with reagent solution and rotate the swab for at least 10 seconds.

2. At the same time, press the end of the swab against the wall of the tube at least five times so that the sample mixes completely. Then remove the swab and close the tube.

3. Place the rapid test on a flat surface. Add 3 drops of the diluted sample to the sample well of the test.

4. Wait for the colored lines to appear. The result must be read after 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the result is invalid.
