Intestinal Parasite (Giardia) Rapid Test
Giardiasis is a diarrheal disease in dogs and cats caused by Giardia parasites. These tiny organisms infect the small intestine and are invisible to the naked eye. Giardia is widespread worldwide, with 41 known species that can affect not only dogs and cats but also rabbits and humans. In pets, Giardia duodenalis or Giardia intestinalis are the most common culprits.
Once inside the host, the parasites attack the lining of the small intestine and feed on sugars from food, reproducing rapidly under favorable conditions. Giardia is highly contagious. Infected pets can easily transmit it to other animals or, less commonly, to humans (zoonosis).
Precautions: People should avoid letting an infected pet lick them—especially children—as this increases the risk of transmission. In young or weak animals, infection can cause severe symptoms and have serious health consequences.
Symptoms of Giardia infection:
-
Diarrhea (sometimes bloody or mucous)
-
Vomiting (in severe cases)
-
Weight loss, loss of appetite, or sometimes increased appetite
-
Bloating, abdominal pain
-
Dry, dull coat
-
Lethargy, fatigue
-
Itchy rectum, scooting on the ground (“sledding”)
