Canine Adenovirus Antigen Rapid Test

A rapid and accurate test designed for the detection of canine adenovirus (CAV) infections, ideal for home use. This test allows for the easy identification of CAV antigens from a dog’s eye or nasal discharge, enabling you to respond quickly to your pet’s health concerns.

What is Canine Adenovirus?

There are two known types of canine adenovirus:

  • CAV-1: The causative agent of infectious canine hepatitis, which can cause severe liver damage.

  • CAV-2: A common cause of respiratory disease and a contributor to “kennel cough.”

The infection mainly spreads via respiratory secretions and is particularly dangerous for puppies and immunocompromised dogs. Symptoms may include fever, lethargy, coughing, nasal discharge, vomiting, and eye or liver problems.

Symptoms of Canine Adenovirus:

CAV-1 (Infectious Canine Hepatitis):

  • Fever (up to 40°C/104°F or higher)

  • Lethargy and fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Vomiting and diarrhea (sometimes bloody)

  • Abdominal pain and bloating

  • Signs of liver damage (jaundice, pale or yellowish mucous membranes)

  • Swollen lymph nodes

  • Bleeding disorders (gum bleeding, nosebleeds)

  • “Blue Eye” syndrome – corneal edema causing a bluish tint to the eye

CAV-2 (Respiratory Infection / Kennel Cough):

  • Dry, harsh cough (often ends with vomiting)

  • Nasal discharge and sneezing

  • Fever (rare, and usually mild)

  • Conjunctivitis (eye inflammation)

  • Loss of appetite

  • Mild lethargy

How the Rapid Test Works

If the test detects the presence of adenovirus antigen, a clear red line appears on the test strip. The result is easy to interpret and available within minutes.

Why Use This Test?

  • Fast diagnosis: Helps identify the disease early so your veterinarian can provide targeted treatment.

  • Easy to use: Designed for home use without any special equipment.

  • Supports prevention: Early detection reduces the risk of spreading the infection to other dogs.

Testing Procedure

  1. Before testing, read the instructions carefully. Allow the test and unopened reagents to reach room temperature (15–30°C).

  2. Tear open the foil pouch along the notch, remove the test cassette, and place it on a clean, flat surface. Collect eye or nasal secretions using the swab, then remove the extraction buffer tube’s foil seal. Immerse the swab in the tube and swirl it in the reagent for at least 10 seconds.

  3. Press the swab end against the tube wall at least five times to mix the sample thoroughly. Squeeze the tube around the swab to extract as much liquid as possible, then remove and discard the swab. Close the tube tightly.

  4. Apply 3 drops of the mixture into the sample well on the test cassette.

  5. Wait for the colored lines to appear. Read the result after 10 minutes. Results after 30 minutes are invalid.
