Toxoplasma Gondii (Toxoplasmosis) Antigen Rapid Test
Toxoplasmosis is caused by a single-celled parasite called Toxoplasma Gondii. Mammals and birds serve as intermediate hosts, while the definitive host is the cat. Toxoplasma gondii can only reproduce in the small intestine of cats, and infected cats excrete oocysts in their feces. These oocysts enter the soil, where intermediate hosts (such as pigs, cattle, mice, or birds) ingest them through contaminated food, continuing the cycle.
The disease transmitted by this parasite is a zoonosis, meaning it can spread from animals to humans — so humans can also become infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Infection may occur through direct contact with oocysts in soil during gardening or by consuming raw or undercooked meat, such as steak tartare, ham, or Mettwurst (a type of raw German sausage).
Cat owners may become infected through contact with cat feces. In healthy adults, infection is usually asymptomatic, but in people with weakened immune systems, it may cause coordination problems and seizures. If a pregnant woman becomes infected, symptoms rarely appear, but the infection can affect the unborn baby. The earlier the infection occurs during pregnancy, the more severe the symptoms may be, ranging from hydrocephalus to miscarriage. Therefore, expectant parents try to avoid toxoplasmosis infection at all costs!
Symptoms of Toxoplasma gondii in dogs and cats:
Cats (main carriers, often asymptomatic):
-
Fever, lethargy
-
Respiratory symptoms (sneezing, nasal discharge)
-
Loss of appetite, weight loss
-
Diarrhea or vomiting (rare)
-
Nervous system symptoms (tremors, paralysis in severe cases)
Most cats are asymptomatic carriers. Since the infection spreads via feces, cat litter should be cleaned regularly.
Dogs (rarer but can be more severe):
-
Fever, weakness
-
Muscle tremors, coordination disorders
-
Breathing difficulties
-
Diarrhea, vomiting
-
Eye inflammation, vision problems
Mostly dangerous for dogs with weakened immune systems or young dogs.
Dangerous for humans, especially pregnant women and immunocompromised individuals!
The rapid test detects Toxoplasma Gondii antigen in stool samples from dogs and cats.
