Feline Panleukopenia Virus (Feline Distemper) and Coronavirus Combined Rapid Test

Panleukopenia is a viral infection caused by the feline panleukopenia virus, a member of the parvovirus genus. These viruses primarily attack rapidly dividing cells in the bone marrow, lymphatic system, and intestinal epithelium. The incubation period is about 2–10 days. The viruses are highly resistant and can survive for months, which means that in multi-cat environments there is always a risk of transmission. Other common names for panleukopenia include feline fever, aleukocytosis, or feline plague. In addition to the feline panleukopenia virus, cats can also be infected by viruses responsible for canine parvovirus.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is another common viral infection in cats. It usually causes asymptomatic infection but may lead to mild diarrhea. Certain mutations of the virus can also result in feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). While most cats recover after FCoV infection, some may develop persistent infections.

Symptoms of Feline Panleukopenia Virus (Feline Distemper):

  • High fever, lethargy

  • Vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody)

  • Loss of appetite, dehydration

  • Painful, tense abdomen

  • Weakness, tremors

  • Decrease in white blood cell count (severe immunodeficiency)

Highly contagious and potentially fatal, especially in kittens! Vaccination can prevent infection.

Symptoms of Feline Coronavirus (FCoV):

  • Mild, self-limiting diarrhea

  • Mild lethargy

  • Nasal discharge, sneezing (rare)

Most cats experience no or only mild symptoms, but in some cases the virus can mutate into FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), which can be fatal.

The rapid test detects both feline panleukopenia virus (feline distemper) and feline coronavirus.
