Urinary tract infection rapid test

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection that affects the organs of the urinary tract, such as the bladder, the urethra, the kidneys and the ureters. The most common causative agents are bacteria, but in rarer cases viruses or fungi can also cause a urinary tract infection. In most cases, a urinary tract infection is limited to the urethra and the bladder, and this is called a lower urinary tract infection. In a smaller proportion of cases, the infection can spread to the kidneys as well, which is called an upper urinary tract infection.

Typical symptoms of a urinary tract infection may include:

1. Frequent and painful urination.
2. Burning sensation or pain in the area of the bladder or urethra.
3. Bloody urine or cloudy, turbid urine.
4. Lower abdominal pain or discomfort.
5. General malaise, fatigue.

The risks of a urinary tract infection include:

1. Spread: A urinary tract infection can spread further up the urinary tract, which can lead to pyelonephritis, kidney failure and more serious complications.
2. Recurrent infections: Some people may be prone to recurrent urinary tract infections. In the case of recurrent infections, appropriate treatment and observance of basic hygiene practices are important.
3. Pregnancy complications: In pregnant women, a urinary tract infection may pose a greater risk. The infection can lead to pregnancy complications, such as preterm birth and low birth weight.
4. Complications in the elderly: In older people, urinary tract infections can have more serious consequences, such as general deterioration, delirium and kidney failure.

Urinary tract infections are usually treated with antibiotics, which are effective against the bacteria causing the infection. However, it is important to follow the doctor's instructions and to complete the full course of treatment in order to recover and avoid complications. Proper hygiene practices, such as complete emptying of the bladder and thorough handwashing, also help to prevent urinary tract infections.

Test procedure

ATTENTION: For this test, it is recommended to collect the urine sample early in the morning, as it is the most concentrated. The urine used for the test must not come into contact with toilet water or with any disinfectant or cleaning agent.

For women only: The test must not be performed during menstruation or within three days after menstruation. The urine sample must not be contaminated with vaginal fluid, as this may give a misleading result.

Do not make any important medical decisions without first consulting your doctor.

COLLECT URINE:
Collect part of the urine in the enclosed plastic cup or in a clean cup free of detergent residues. Make sure that you fill the cup with urine.

1. Open the foil pouch and take out the test strip. Do not touch the test areas. After opening the pouch, it is recommended to perform the test immediately.

2. Dip the test strip into the urine sample.

ATTENTION: Press the strip down into the urine and make sure that all four test areas are immersed for about 1–2 seconds.

3. Then remove the test strip and blot off the excess urine against the rim of the container or with an absorbent material (e.g. a paper towel), to avoid mixing of chemicals from adjacent reagents.

4. Wait 2 minutes (do not read the results after 3 minutes have passed). Read the result separately for each parameter and compare the color with the enclosed color chart.

Reliability of the urinary tract infection rapid test

Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and precision are important parameters for the user. The general design of the test is such that it is specific for the parameters to be measured, with the exception of the interferences listed. The interpretation of visual results depends on several factors: differences in color perception, the presence or absence of inhibiting factors, and the lighting conditions when the strip is read. Each color block on the chart corresponds to a range of analyte concentrations.
